This is my first season with Tacoma Refugee Choir, and I've been so happy to find a place of peace and joy amid the chaos and animosity of the world.
The choir started 10 years ago in partnership with Tacoma Community House with a group of 22 refugees and community members. We put on multicultural performances several times a year, host community workshops, and perform for various community events. Recently we performed for the Mayor's State of the City Address, and in March we will be visiting several local schools to join them for multicultural musical celebrations. This year we've been invited to perform at Northwest Folklife Festival on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th! And our biggest event of the year is coming up on May 30th at the Tacoma Armory! We'd love to see you there!
Our focus is on building community, support, and connectedness through music from a variety of musical traditions. We sing in many languages, including English, Spanish, Swahili, Shona, Belarussian and more. We are happy to welcome anyone with a desire to create a community where everyone, regardless of their place of origin, can feel like they belong. In fact, one of our favorite songs to perform really embodies this mission. "Everyone, from everywhere, is welcome!"
As a 501(c)(3) we depend on grants and direct contributions to exist and do this work. As I'm sure you're aware, government funding for this kind of endeavor has dramatically decreased, so this fundraiser is more important than ever. Please join me in supporting the Tacoma Refugee Choir this year, as a one time or ongoing donation.
